Researchers are discovering how music affects the brain, helping us make sense of its emotional and social power.
Music impacts us in ways that other sounds do not, and for years scientists have wondered why. Using fMRI technology, researchers have explored why music can inspire strong feelings and bind us so tightly to other people.
Valorie Salimpoor, a neuroscientist at McGill University, has studied how music affects deep emotional centres in the brain. A single tone may not be pleasurable on its own, but when sounds are organised over time into music, the effect can be powerful.
In one study, participants listened to favourite pieces of music while their brain activity was recorded. During peak emotional moments, dopamine was released in the nucleus accumbens, a structure associated with biological rewards and pleasure.
Another part of the brain, the caudate nucleus, appears to be involved just before those peak moments. This suggests that anticipation and memory are central to musical pleasure: we recognise patterns, expect certain moments, and enjoy being confirmed or surprised.
When people listen to unfamiliar music, their brains search for recognisable patterns in rhythm, melody and structure. If music is too foreign-sounding it may be hard to predict; if it contains enough familiar features, listeners can anticipate emotional peaks and enjoy them.
This may explain why people can listen to the same song repeatedly and still enjoy it. The emotional response to a familiar piece can be so strong that hearing it years later can bring back feelings almost instantly.
Music psychologist Ed Large has also studied how musical dynamics affect the brain. Variations in tempo, rhythm and intensity can resonate with brain rhythms and shape how listeners experience a piece.
When people hear the same music together, such as in a concert hall, their brains can synchronise in rhythmic ways, creating a shared emotional experience. Music communicates partly by aligning the performer and listener through sound, timing and expectation.
Different people still respond differently because musical taste is shaped by personal history, culture and exposure. The patterns we learn from childhood onward influence what we find familiar, surprising, moving or exciting.
